THERE'S MORE POWER TOGETHER
_edited.png)
Our Mission.
GIRL POWER, established in 2018, is a collaboration of 4 nonprofits with similar missions that all support and empower women and girls in New London and Windham County.
Our Team.
Representatives from each of our organizations meet throughout the year to work together on joint-fundraising efforts and to support each other's programs. Our largest Girl Power fundraiser is our Bowlathon held annually on the first Sunday in May in Groton.
While we are each individually good at what we do for women and girls, we are far better together through expanding our networks and resources. All funding raised is equally divided between all four organizations who are part of the Girl Power collaborative.
S.T.E.P.S. Inc. acts as our Girl Power fiduciary for all our collaborative efforts.
S.T.E.P.S. (Striving Toward Empowered Personal Success), has the mission of "empowering girls and uplifting communities by providing young women the tools necessary to build lives of integrity and self-sufficiency through positive choice." They have worked to empower at-risk, low income girls, ages 8-18 in New London, Norwich and Groton. Their funds support their afterschool workshops in the 3 school districts.
Girls on the Run, for grades 3-8, has the mission to "inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident" and they have their athletic programs in New London and Windham County. They use their funds to provide the running shoes and equipment for low-income girls
Girls Scouts Troop 63414, with the mission to "develop girls of character, confidence and courage who will make the world a better place" are in grades 4-10. They use their funds to provide camperships and needed supplies for low income girls.
Soroptimist CT Shoreline Club is an international organization chartered by the United Nations to "improve the lives of women and girls through a global network of volunteers and provide access to education, empowerment and advocacy for social and economic advancement." Their funds will be used to support their Dream It Be It girl's high school career and leadership program
Our Goals.
1. Provide a leadership model for women and girls in our community.
2. Provide a template for other nonprofits to show how working together can benefit their missions.
3. Sustain a strong collaborative model for future events.
4. Establish a strong financial model for sharing resources between each of the four organizations.
Our History.
We are made up of representatives from four separate nonprofits: S.T.E.P.S., Inc., Girls on the Run Southeastern CT, Girl Scouts (Troop 63414 from Waterford, Norwich and New London), and Soroptimist Eastern Connecticut Shoreline.
Our first year of collaboration as Girl Power was in 2018. We were recognized at the Eastern CT Chamber of Commerce non-profit award ceremony with the first annual "Collaboration of the Year" award due to our efforts. We saw a need to promote collaboration, reduce duplication, expand limited resources, and network on behalf of our non-profits. We continue those efforts together today, as we work cooperatively on fundraising and projects that benefit women and girls in Eastern CT. Our shared expertise in fundraising, marketing, and programming allow us to make the most of our cooperative endeavors and to equally benefit all of our organizations
